What does dependent or independent student mean for financial aid?

What is the definition of a “parent” for the FAFSA?

For Federal Student Aid (FSA) purposes, a parent includes a biological or adoptive parent, or some一个 married to a biological or adoptive parent.

The following may NOT be considered as "parents":   

  • Legal guardians
  • Foster parents

  • Other relatives

Do I have to report my parent’s information on the FAFSA?

If you can answer 是的 至少 一个 of the Dependency Status questions on the FAFSA, you are considered "independent," meaning parental information is 不 required on the FAFSA. Additional verification or documentation may be required by our office.

  • Will you be 24 or older by Jan. 1 for the school year you are applying for financial aid?
  • Are you married as of the day you file FAFSA?
  • Are you working on a master's or doctorate program?
  • 你目前是现役军人吗?
  • Are you a veteran of the U.S. 武装部队?

Dependency Appeals for Unusual Circumstances

如果你有不寻常的家庭情况,不包括在FAFSA的问题, you may be able appeal to our office for Independent Status. Unusual family circumstances include, but are 不 limited to:

If you have other unusual circumstances that you think might qualify, contact our office to discuss your situation in more detail.

If you think you might be eligible to appeal for independent status, contact our office to discuss your situation. If we think you might qualify for an override, 我们将通过电子邮件向您发送抚养申诉表,并要求您将其与您的情况文件一起退回.

Circumstances That Do Not Warrant a Dependency Appeal

  • Parents refuse to contribute to educational costs

  • Student demonstrates total self-sufficiency

Parents Refusal to Complete the FAFSA
